If you are choosing packaging for cat litter, one of the first decisions you will face is whether to go with vacuum seal or ziplock closure. Both are popular. Both have clear advantages. But they serve different purposes, and choosing the wrong one can cost you customers.
We manufacture both types of packaging for pet brands, and we have seen what works and what does not in real-world conditions. Here is an honest comparison to help you decide.
How Vacuum Seal Works
Vacuum seal packaging removes all the air from inside the bag before sealing it shut. The bag hugs the product tightly, creating a compact, air-free environment. This is the same technology used for coffee packaging and freeze-dried pet food.
For cat litter, vacuum sealing has one major advantage: it blocks moisture completely. With no air inside the bag, there is no moisture for the litter to absorb. Even humidity-sensitive products like tofu litter and wood pellets stay bone-dry in a vacuum-sealed bag.

How Ziplock Works
Ziplock packaging uses a mechanical closure that the customer opens and closes by hand. The bag is sealed at the factory with the product inside and air still present. The customer opens it with a tear notch, uses what they need, and presses the ziplock shut.
The big advantage of ziplock is convenience. Your customer does not need scissors, clips, or a separate container. Open, pour, close. It sounds simple, but this convenience is exactly what keeps customers coming back to your brand instead of switching to one with easier packaging.
Head-to-Head Comparison
| Feature | Vacuum Seal | Ziplock |
|---|---|---|
| Moisture protection | Excellent – no air means no moisture | Good – reduces but does not eliminate air exposure |
| Odor containment | Excellent – complete seal locks in odor | Good – ziplock holds but not airtight |
| Customer convenience | Lower – needs to cut open, no resealing | High – easy open and reseal |
| Resealable | No – once opened, the vacuum is broken | Yes – designed for repeated use |
| Shelf appearance | Compact but can look deflated | Full, upright, retail-ready |
| Product visibility | Bag hugs product tightly | Bag maintains shape for display |
| Cost | Higher – requires vacuum equipment | Lower – standard bag-making process |
| Best for | Long-term storage, export shipping | Retail sales, daily use products |
When to Choose Vacuum Seal

Vacuum seal makes sense in these situations:
- Export shipping – When your litter travels by sea for weeks, vacuum sealing prevents moisture damage during transit
- Humid climates – If your target market is Southeast Asia, coastal regions, or anywhere with high humidity
- Moisture-sensitive litter – Tofu, wood, and corn litter are much more vulnerable to moisture than clay
- Long shelf life – If your product sits in a warehouse or on shelves for months before sale
The downside is that once the customer opens a vacuum-sealed bag, they cannot reseal it the same way. They will need to transfer the litter to a container or use it up quickly.
When to Choose Ziplock
Ziplock is the better choice when:
- Retail sales – Customers expect to open and reseal pet food and litter bags at home
- Repeat purchases – If your product is a household staple that customers buy regularly, convenience matters
- Heavy products – Cat litter is heavy and customers need to pour it out in portions, not all at once
- Brand presentation – A ziplock bag stands upright on shelves and looks professional
The trade-off is that ziplock does not protect as well as vacuum seal during long-term storage or in extreme humidity. But for most retail situations, it is more than adequate.
The Best of Both Worlds
Some brands use a combination approach: vacuum seal the bag at the factory for shipping and storage, then include a resealable ziplock that the customer uses after opening. This gives you maximum protection during transit and maximum convenience for the end user.
This approach costs more because you need both vacuum equipment and a ziplock closure on the same bag. But for premium litter brands or products shipping to humid markets, it is worth the investment.
