I’ve been selling plastic bags and non-woven bags for over 10 years now. One question I get asked almost every day by my clients is: “Which one should I choose — non-woven bags or plastic bags?” The answer isn’t as simple as you might think. It really depends on what you’re using them for, your budget, and who your customers are.
Let me share what I’ve learned from working with hundreds of buyers around the world. I’ll break it down in a way that actually helps you make a decision, not just a list of technical specs.

What Exactly Are Non-Woven Bags?
Non-woven bags are made from polypropylene (PP) fabric. The material is bonded together using heat — it’s not woven like traditional fabric, which is where the name comes from. If you’ve ever received a reusable shopping bag from a supermarket or a trade show, chances are it was a non-woven bag.
They feel a bit like cloth, but they’re lighter and cheaper to produce. You can print full-color logos on them, and they come in pretty much any color you want. Most of my clients who order non-woven bags use them for retail stores, promotional events, and corporate giveaways.
And Plastic Bags?
Plastic bags are made from polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP). They’re the bags you see at grocery stores, markets, and shops everywhere. They come in different types — T-shirt bags (the ones with handles), garbage bags, food packaging bags, ziplock bags, and more.

Plastic bags are cheaper per piece, waterproof, and take up very little storage space. For businesses that need large quantities at low cost, plastic bags are still the go-to choice. I’ve had clients who order 100,000+ pieces at a time for their retail chains.
The Real Differences That Matter
Let me be honest with you — there’s no “better” option. It depends on your situation. Here’s what I tell my clients:
Cost: Plastic bags are cheaper. A basic PE shopping bag costs about $0.01-0.03 per piece. A non-woven bag with the same size costs about $0.05-0.15 per piece. If you’re ordering 10,000+ pieces, that difference adds up fast.
Durability: Non-woven bags last much longer. A good quality non-woven bag can be reused 50-100 times. A plastic bag? Usually once or twice before it tears. So if you want your brand to be seen repeatedly, non-woven is the way to go.
Printing quality: Non-woven bags hold color better and give you more surface area for your logo. If branding is your priority, non-woven bags look more professional and premium.
Environmental perception: This is a big one. More countries and cities are banning single-use plastic bags. Non-woven bags are reusable and recyclable, so they’re seen as more eco-friendly. If your customers care about sustainability (and most do these days), non-woven bags send a better message.
Waterproof: Plastic bags win here. If you’re packaging food, liquids, or anything that might leak, plastic bags are the practical choice.

When I Recommend Non-Woven Bags
I usually suggest non-woven bags to clients who:
- Run retail stores or boutiques that want a premium look
- Attend trade shows and need branded giveaway bags
- Want to promote their brand through reusable bags
- Sell to eco-conscious markets in Europe or North America
- Need bags for gift packaging or luxury products
Most of my European clients have switched to non-woven bags because of plastic bag regulations. The minimum order quantity is usually 500-1,000 pieces, which is manageable for most businesses.
When Plastic Bags Make More Sense
Plastic bags are still the right choice when:
- You need waterproof or moisture-proof packaging
- You’re packaging food items (especially fresh produce or frozen food)
- Budget is your top priority and you need large quantities
- Your market doesn’t have plastic bag restrictions
- You need lightweight bags for shipping
For food delivery businesses, plastic bags are still essential. I supply many restaurants and food chains with custom-printed PE bags and garbage bags.
What About the Cost Difference?
Here’s a rough breakdown based on my experience (prices vary by size, thickness, and quantity):
A standard shopping bag (about 30x40cm):
- PE plastic bag: $0.01 – $0.03 per piece (MOQ: 5,000+)
- Non-woven bag: $0.05 – $0.15 per piece (MOQ: 500+)
Custom printing adds cost to both, but non-woven bags actually print better with more colors. For simple 1-2 color logos, plastic bags are very affordable.
My Recommendation
After 10 years in this business, here’s my honest advice: if your budget allows, go with non-woven bags. They look better, last longer, and are better for the environment. Your customers will notice the difference.
But if you need large quantities on a tight budget, plastic bags are still a solid choice. Many of my long-term clients use both — non-woven bags for their retail stores and plastic bags for food packaging or shipping.
